University of Akron Social Media Student Assistant
I began my role as a Social Media Student Assistant at The University of Akron in October 2023, joining the External Communications team. The social media team is small, consisting of my boss, myself, and three others who assist but have additional responsibilities beyond social media. I created content for all university accounts across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, and X (Twitter), with a primary focus on Instagram, and TikTok. My work included both on-camera and behind-the-scenes content creation, producing informational posts about campus events and initiatives. In addition to content creation, I analyzed page performance and engagement metrics, tracked online mentions of the university, generated reports on public perception, and researched SEO and platform algorithms to optimize our strategy.

The content I created was primarily fun and engaging, designed to capture students' attention and keep them connected to campus life. I stayed on top of online trends to ensure our posts remain relevant and interactive. The long post above this paragraph is a seamless transition post on Instagram, recapping everything that happened on campus in August. Below, the two images highlight different types of content I produced: one from Zippy’s Horoscopes, a recurring series where I created themed horoscope posts, and another from a promotional video for Zips Invade events, where the university partners with local businesses in downtown Akron to offer students free items. These posts reflect my ability to blend trending content, informative updates, and promotional material to enhance student engagement on Instagram.

TikTok
On TikTok, I focused on incorporating popular trends and student interviews to keep content engaging and centered around the university experience. By balancing trending sounds, challenges, and relatable student moments, I helped maintain a strong connection with our audience. During my time working on the UAkron TikTok page, we gained over 4,000 followers. The second video below is the most-viewed video on the account, surpassing 100,000 views and contributing to over 2,400 new followers from that post alone. This demonstrates the power of leveraging trends and authentic student content to grow engagement and expand the university’s reach on TikTok.
